MEDIA ADVISORY Professor and Dean Alison "Sunny" Power
of Cornell elected Alison "Sunny" Power, professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and dean of the Graduate School at Cornell University, has been elected president of the Ecological Society of America. As the world's largest society of professional ecologists, ESA represents more than 10,000 scientists, students, policymakers and managers from across the globe. "I am very pleased and honored to take this leading role in the ecological community," says Power, who has been a member of ESA for more than 20 years. "I look forward to helping my colleagues advance quality research programs, enhance educational tools and practices and increase the visibility and relevance of ecological science to our country's legislators." Founded in 1915, the Society works to communicate and promote the science of ecology through reports, journals, research, education and expert testimony to policymakers. The Society's Annual Meeting attracts more than three thousand attendees each year and presents the most recent ecological research. Members conduct research that ranges across the fields of biology, zoology, aquatic systems, forestry, wildlife conservation, agricultural systems, earth and environmental sciences, toxicology and biotechnology. "In this era of rapid ecological change, it is more important than ever that we ecologists work together to inform the public about our work," says Power. Power's research involves disease ecology and the interactions between agricultural and natural ecosystems. She is particularly interested in the ecology and epidemiology of plant viruses in both natural and agricultural ecosystems. Her recent work focuses on the impacts of disease on host communities and reciprocal effects of host community structure on disease spread. She has also carried out research on the ecological risks of agricultural technologies, such as genetically engineered crops. |
